Special 04:

Biblical Marriages

Walk through the eight types of marriages mentioned in the Bible (with my personal storytelling and clapbacks).

If you’ve ever wondered just how much marital variety is in the Bible, or have all kinds of resistance to “what is written” on female life and marriage, I’m here to give you a better understanding paired with history, culture, and balance.

Many of the marriage forms listed in the Bible are archaic today, so I am not suggesting that we implement them all; but that there’s some practical wisdom to be gleaned if we care to learn.

I serve up this episode with humor, personality, and personal storytelling because some of the topics are touchy and who isn’t sensitive about faith, especially what’s written in the Bible? But, I am sure to deliver historical truths and modern practice, honoring the lives and agency of women (and calling men out where needed).

Words like “virgin” and “premarital sex” irk me because the way we used them today isn’t always parallel with how they were understood back then (or even the definition of origin), but I still take the journey with you, teaching distinctions and highlighting patriarchal or misogynistic doctrine

Today, you’re getting an overview on the eight common marriage formations in the Bible with a centering of (Black) female life

By the end of the episode, you’ll know more about monogamy, virginity, female protection, and other types of marriage, using stories from the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible).

Because I share this episode in an ordinal format, you know I had to hook you up with a freebie to follow me. • [10:11] – I contrast Ancient Israel with modern America in Genesis 2:24.

  • [17:24] – I challenge the logic of laws emphasizing female virginity.
  • [20:24] – I challenge men to protect their women sexually, appreciating Minister Farrakhan’s defense of women with his daughter.
  • [23:01] – Men labeling women as “hoes” can overlook their role, sharing how men may shape women’s images and realities.
  • [25:06] – Responsibility for pregnancy is not one-sided; both contribute.
  • [27:48] –  Men asserting a “God-given” right to multiple wives ignore Biblical instances.
  • [30:56] – In ancient Israel, bondservants served willingly for six years, with the option for voluntary commitment.
  • [32:49] – Abraham & Sarah (plus Hagar’s) marriage may raise questions about consent.
  • [34:43] – I share a sample list of men cited as having concubines, reflecting cultural practices without explicit Biblical endorsement or condemnation.
  • [36:20] – Levirate marriage involves a widowed woman marrying her deceased husband’s brother to preserve lineage.
  • [39:04] – Male bondservants could be given wives by their masters, with the servant’s choice to stay or leave after service.
  • [40:15] – The seventh type of biblical marriage involves male soldiers marrying female prisoners of war after a military victory.
  • [41:28] – A man and a virgin caught in the act, leading to marriage, seems like the most scandalous of the kind.
